As a health-conscious person, you’re no stranger to healthy eating, proper exercise, supplementation, and mindfulness techniques.

You’ve likely dabbled or faithfully practiced all of them to ensure you feel your best and are actively preventing health issues.

That’s why, as you consider becoming a mother, you also want to ensure everything is in order with your overall wellbeing before you get pregnant.

Not just because you know it will help with successfully conceiving, but because you know the state of your body now has an impact on the development of your baby.

And you’re absolutely right.

I want to assure you, this is the space for you! Here you’ll get support so you can provide the right nutrition for yourself and positively shape your future baby’s lifelong health.

The traditional healthcare system is under strain and not set up for a preventive approach. We do things differently around here. We’re all about taking preventive action and promoting health through the foundational blocks of nutrition and lifestyle. And we want to empower you to be proactive in your journey as a parent so you can nurture your baby’s wellbeing from the very beginning.

Welcome

Our mission at Nourishment for Generations is to support women entering into their journey to motherhood so they can give their baby the healthiest possible start in life and ensure they don’t become part of the declining health stats in the US.

Here’s what the health picture in the US looks like right now:

  • For the first time in two centuries, the current generation of children in America may have shorter life expectancies than their parents, due to chronic health conditions. [1]

  • The US has the highest infant mortality (71% higher) of any comparable country (5.8 per 1,000 in 2017). [2]

  • 1 in 6 children in the US are diagnosed with a developmental disability.

  • Childhood obesity rates were at almost 20% for the 2017-2020 period.

YEP, THAT’S A LOT TO TAKE IN…

LET’S TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND LOOK AT THE BRIGHTER SIDE (YES, THERE IS ONE!)

Nutrition and lifestyle during preconception, pregnancy and early life make a MAJOR contribution to your baby’s health for years to come. Let's leverage this window of opportunity together! We’re here to partner with you and help you optimize your and your baby’s health from preconception until your child’s 2nd birthday.

Why?

Children who get the right nutrition during the first 1,000 days of life, starting at conception [3]:

  • Are more likely to be born at a healthy weight.

  • Have a lower risk of chronic illnesses and diseases, including obesity and type 2 diabetes.

  • Are better learners and have fewer behavior challenges in kindergarten.

  • Enjoy improved health and economic security as adults.

The work we do at Nourishment for Generations is inspired and guided by two evidence-based scientific frameworks:
the 100-year effect and the first 1,000 days of life. Learn more here.

I’m here to support you each step of the way.

My Journey

to motherhood & Founding Nourishment for Generations

Fertility nutritionist who helps with nutrition prior to pregnancy

I’ve always been passionate about the natural world. Since middle school, it was clear that I would pursue a degree in Biology. It only made sense given my never-ending pursuit of why? and how? regarding nature.

I followed that passion through college and grad school. And then returned to the classroom as the teacher. Since then, I’ve taught over a thousand students the ins and outs of how our tiny (yet mighty) cells work and how they make our bodily world go round and round.

Continuing to follow my curiosity (and my journey of health challenges, which include two pregnancy losses) I came to learn how critical nutrition is for fertility, pregnancy, and long-term health outcomes for moms and babies.

I went back to school to pursue Holistic Nutrition after my youngest was born to dive deeper into nutrition and reproductive health. The overall message I got in school, and one that deeply stuck with me, is that we’re losing health at an alarming rate with each passing generation.

We’re three generations into a drastic change in diet and lifestyle in the US, and it shows. Even more alarming is that the health outcomes for babies and children are also declining with chronic health conditions now rearing their ugly heads earlier and earlier in life.

This is what pulled at my heartstrings. As a mom. As a human on this planet. There was a strong nudge inside me to work towards restoring health. I wanted to create a space that’s part of the solution. A space that contributes to turning those statistics around.

If you’re someone who follows your intuition, you may already know that as soon as you’re open to your inner nudges, possibilities start to open up. I found the resources and made the (serendipitous) personal connections that lead me to dive into the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease and into the evidence-based frameworks of the 100-year effect and the first 1,000 days of life.

If this sounds like nerdy stuff, it’s because it is ;)

To summarize the science, in the words of author Judith Finlayson, “your health at preconception, the food you eat while pregnant, and the environment surrounding your baby for the first 1,000 days of life, together, play the most important role in your child’s health and development.“

What does this mean for you and your growing family? It’s uplifting news. You have a beautiful window of opportunity to lay a strong foundation of health for your child from preconception until their 2nd birthday.

I created Nourishment for Generations for you and your family, so we can collectively have a positive influence on the health of you, your baby, and future generations.

Jessica Hund, PT, DPT

Jess was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and moved to America when she was 6 years old. She grew up in the San Juan islands and went to Western Washington University before moving to Portland to attend George Fox University for PT school.

Jess is a mama of two and through this became very aware of the disparity of care for women following childbirth.  She was the one hiding the urine leaking while running/jumping and the one who didn’t want to tell anyone that sex was still painful (according to the Mayo clinic 50% of women suffer from this).  Then she discovered pelvic floor therapy and her passion grew to advocate for better care. So she started The Floor PDX! At her clinic, she offers 1:1 treatment sessions for an hour with you through evidence based care as well as in-home postpartum visits.

Verenis Estrada, ND

Verenis completed her 4-year Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine program at the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM) in Portland, Oregon.

Her clinical internships included rotations with medical professionals in naturopathic and conventional medical fields, including gynecology, family medicine, gastroenterology neurology, minor surgery, wound care, and chiropractic medicine.

Before attending NUNM she graduated with a Master of Science in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine from the University of Western States. These experiences allow her to confidently integrate naturopathic medicine, botanical medicine, nature cures, and pharmaceuticals to achieve individualized wellness for her clients.
